What you should expect during a session:

A typical consultation where a podiatrist may use shockwave therapy as a treatment is made up of the following elements :

  • An assessment where a podiatrist will look at all elements which may be causing your pain such as gait, footwear, type of activity and increases to activity.

  • A treatment plan will be formulated to help meet your goals. Usually 6-8 weekly sessions may be required for an injury that is deemed chronic and 4-6 weekly sessions for a more acute injury. Depending on your goals and timeframes, this can be adapted to best suit your needs.

  • Although shockwave can be a slightly uncomfortable treatment, we work with our clients to make it less uncomfortable by using the V actor machine to help de-sensitise the treatment area and using verbal feedback with patients. We progress our treatments slowly to accommodate each person to make sure you are able to progress comfortably.

  • It is common for our Podiatrist’s to use multiple treatment modalities in a session. So even though you are interested in Shockwave we may also use high powered laser, dry needling, cupping and exercise therapy all in the same session or a combination of the above.

  • Using shockwave as a treatment is versatile therapy as the different head pieces of the machine can be used to target different depths of tissue.

  • Everybody is different but a typical pain progression for a client after a shockwave session is to feel slight discomfort after 24-48 hours within the treatment and the discomfort should disappear over the next 24 hours due to the soft tissue recovering from the treatment. As the healing of the soft tissue can take 6-8 weeks normally, you will notice after 7-10 days after each session, you may notice a difference in your  pain level and then it may return before your next treatment session which is a sign more sessions are required to treat the condition to help it’s progression.

  • Often clients will feel a reduction in the pain if this treatment is suitable after 4 sessions  or a reassessment or imaging may be required for re-evaluation.

  1. Reduce the amount of chronic inflammation around those structures
  2. Help release trigger points
  3. Stimulate production of collagen which is important in the repair of damage tissues
